Home :: Kenya :: Northern Kenya

The Northern plains are home to nomadic tribes including the Samburu and the Rendille, who move with their camel trains following dry riverbeds across a great semi arid wilderness. Here, rare species such as the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra and Gerenuk are found.

The North is a land of boundless space, much of it ranch-land and the communal grazing areas of nomadic communities. Nestled amongst the ranges and along the banks the palm-fringed rivers are some of Kenya ’s most exclusive and attractive private camps and lodges, and some of the best opportunities for adventurous safaris on foot, by camel or
private 4WD.

Samburu & Buffalo Springs National Reserves; on the hot and arid fringes of the vast northern region of Kenya, these reserves are within the lands of the colourful Samburu pastoralists. They are also home to a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya. Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, the Beisa Oryx and the Somali Ostrich as well as Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. Relief in this dramatic landscape comes from the broad band of the Ewaso Ngiro River, fringed by doum palms and riverine forest. Here the large herds of Elephant seek shade and refreshment and it is not uncommon to find both Crocodile and Elephant sharing the same sandbank.
Shaba National Reserve;Shaba is located close to Samburu & Buffalo Springs and is also a highly recommended Reserve with a spectacular scenery. Known as Born Free country this reserve of crystal clear springs, marsh,, savannah and wooded grassland was made famous by George and Joy Adamson and their lioness Elsa. Shaba is home to Elephant, Lion, Leopard and Cheetah as well as host of wildlife unique to the area including the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk and Beisa Oryx.

Meru National Park is one of the least visited parks, untrampled, unspoiled and pristine. Abundantly traversed by streams flowing from the Tana River on its southern boundary, and luxuriantly rained upon, the rolling jungle of tall grass, riverine forest and swamp. Meru’s intimate, unusual landscape is quickly entrancing. Most of the time you really are alone in the surreal wilderness. This is also the area where the Adamsons released their most famous lioness Elsa back into the wild.
