Shimba Hills Game Lodge

Shimba Lodge is located 48km from Mombasa town and is a 45 minutes drive from the ferry or from Kenya's South coast. It sits within Shimba Hills National Reserve. Accommodation is in 67 comfortable and uniquely furnished rooms, some with the gnarled trunk of a tree providing a natural centerpiece, and others overlook the waterhole.

Single, double and triple rooms have access to toilet and shower facilities while suites have their own bathrooms.The open fronted dining room allows unrestricted game and bird viewing at all times, and an elevated walkway extending well into the forest gives peace seeking visitors a few rare moments alone with nature.

Deep in the national reserve is a spectacular breathtaking 82 foot waterfall with anatural plunge pool. A shower in the cool clean waters of the fall or a dip in the pool is quiet refreshing after the walk. As you walk following the trail, the ranger ornaturalist will educate you on the rich flora and fauna found in the park.

Apart from game, the park offers stunning panoramic observation points with views sometimes as far as the ocean. The park has over a thousand species of plants some endemic the area. With a lineage of over 200 million years the Cycad is a palm like plant of the forest undergrowth. Shimba is only habitat of the magnificent Sable antelope in the country. Other regular visitors to Shimba are herds of African Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, and Colobus monkey and Bushbabies. Carnivores include leopard and spotted hyena.

Sable Valley Treehouse

The mystique mood of Karen Blixen and the sepia days of ?Out of Africa? can be re-lived only forty minutes away from Diani, way up in the Shimba Range of Hills. Sable Valley Treehouse is situated on the verdant crescent of the Shimba and Sable Valley amid surrounding hilltops. This crescent forms the boundary to the National Reserve forested wildlife sanctuary. So this tree house is exceptional on the coastal area of Kenya ? forested and elevated from the coastal plain.

Here, there is an almost spiritual ambiance. Breathtaking views of the valley, the occasional Sable herd passing close by and an elephant family coming to graze for a pachyderm sundowner. A natural phenomenon, Sables are not known for their numbers in Kenya ? indeed this is the only place you will see them.

The balcony of your Tree House has been placed with deliberate care. Here you can watch the moon rise in the East and the sunset in the West, and overhead, the romance of the African night sky. Have you dreamt of sleeping beneath these stars? (This is not for the light hearted ? it?s a wild experience) The Ndovu four-poster bed can be safely wheeled forward beneath the panorama and star gazing accomplished in comfort.

The Tree house has been designed and constructed using local materials and resources. It offers an interior design of surprise and exception, the Jacuzzi is prepared for you for a sundowner and thereafter your personal Butler serves a candle-lit dinner here, on a table set for two.

The veil of dawn will lift with the song of bird life in morning and you may awake gently. Perhaps there may also be the odd elephant making his or her presence known below you as you reach for the bell to summon your morning coffee, tea and fresh juice to be enjoyed with the magnificent vista that falls before you. Breakfast is served on the verandah.
